Winnsboro Junior Clinic Wrong?

As I understand it, Adults are going to conduct a Silhouette clinic for the Junior shooters at Winnsboro on Friday afternoon. This is backwards. I do not know of a Junior Shooter or Sub-Junior shooter that does not outshoot me at every Match. In fact I say the statistics would prove our Juniors' average scores are higher than the adults' average scores. I am very proud of our Junior shooters, how well they shoot and conduct themselves. I hope the successful Juniors will boldly speak and take part in the class on the teaching side giving their input in addition to Innocent and Kitty. Looking forward to this class.

What you say does make sense....we ought to let the juniors put on a clinic for adults....only thing is most adults won't take advice from a 12 year old And another thing, why are we giving a special award for high lady???? Have we taken a good look at who is leading this sport??

We should give a "Last Master" award. We should also have a minimum height to shoot to limit ego damage. I think 56" ought to do it..........

Kitty, that is a very good idea about the High Man Award. The idea has been tossed around before albeit half-heartedly. The time has come for the High Man Award to be a reality in this sport and I do not mean stopping the High Lady Award. Let's have both High Man and High Lady Awards. Low Master is a good idea also. The median or average score Class Awards were really very popular at 2010 Winnsboro.

How about it Duckgumbo? Got time for another award at Winnsboro?

I have asked for advice from 12 year-olds but they will not talk to me about shooting while they are at a Match. Those Sub-Juniors sure are tight-lipped about their training techniques.

High Lady already has their own award its called "Match Winner" you would think that would be enough huh!

Now as a female...in defense of the high lady trophy, originally it was awarded as encouragement to get women interested and all matches you had the choice as a shooter of the class (b-master or MW) trophy or the catagory (hi lady, hi junior, hi senior etc.) award, but you could not take both class and catagory. Whichever you took the remainder award went to the next in line...spread the awards out, made lots feel good, and I still do that, case in point the FL and GA states this spring.
It encouraged mor shooters to come out, as there is a better chance of brining home those fine awards.

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH MARY. SPREAD IT OUT. YEA - I HAVE HEARD THE "WELL SHE IS THE HIGH LADY" BUT I SAY LET HER BE "MATCH WINNER", "HIGH WHATEVER" BUT GIVE ANOTHER A SHOT AT IT.

We had a Hi Man award at the Texas Nationals last year. We also recognized another trodden minority. High Lefty. Bill Motl and Wimpy Page won those. Nothing like being on the cutting edge. I really like the Last Master and High Man award. I can think of some very interesting trophies..........

Gator, several states that I know have an Open State Champion and a Resident State Champion, requiring residency to be the state champion would send a message to the out of state shooters that their efforts would not be recognized if they won it and its possible they would not even bother to go to that state match, at least I would not and in today's economy I would think every state would want to have as many shooters as possible and not alienate anybody from going to theirs.

In regards to the special awards also I know states that spreads those awards around so that if any body wins a MW or a trophy in their class they are not eligible to win high lady, Junior or Senior awards. My feeling is that a MW should not take a special award as well.

I have always felt state champ should be a resident of the state. Match winner can be from any state. Tony has it going resident state champ, and state champ, either way still acknowledges the residents
as high shooter for that state.

I like the idea of state champ being a resident of the state, too, with anyone eligible for match/tournament winner and prizes. The underlying principle of "state champion" should be best in that state, right? Now if it were a "regional championship" then that might be loosened up a bit, of course. Like any rules, it's up to the ones running the match to decide, as long as they don't conflict with the NRA rules if it's NRA-sanctioned.

I agree there should be a state resident champ and if the match winner isn't from the state they are still the match winner but the highest score from an in state resident shooter should be given State Champ. You can't not allow out of state folks to win the match but that should just be a match winner award. If I went to Florida and won the State match I would know I beat the Florida state champion that was crowned as well and that would be good enough for me. Call it non-resident state champ and match winner.

Lets be realistic here though, state championships are just excuses for us all to meet at different locations and shoot against each other.

In reality, "state championships" should be based on a points score accumulated throughout the season. The way state matches are currently done is not greatly different than the way we run our monthly matches. We are basing our "state championship" on one match. I feel that a state champion should be a points race... like it is in most forms of racing.

This would however limit the number of big matches that are available. We would have to fill the gap with big matches like the CBC and such.

Regarding state residency for state champs, Jerry and I have always been of the opinion that if you shoot the highest score, you are the state champ regardless of your residency. If you just want a state championship, then limit your match to only state residents.

We are now running a Regional Championship and not a state shoot. The Louisiana State Match is held in south Louisiana by a bunch of great guys around that area. I am not sure what they do regarding a state champion. We always had the TRUE state champion and a resident state champion to give our state residents something to shoot for besides the state team award.
