Nemo, I just looked a this thread today. I shoot a 1967 model 54 single shot action as my standard rifle in smallbore. It has a Shilen barrel on it with one of Steve Woosters stocks and makes weight no problem. I actually like the single shot over a repeater for the simple fact that it slows me down and makes me take a breath or two and focus more about what I'm doing. In fact when I switch to my hunter which is a 1712 I find my self reaching down to grab and load another round sometimes. When I bought her she was a club gun with the peep sights on her and the original heavy wood stock that had seen better days. What I was interested in was the action and the trigger cause I knew I was going to build a custom rifle. If you find one buy it and dont ever sell it. Theres a lot of options out there to lighten her up and make weight. I'll try a get some pics of her in the next couple of days.

What series are you all getting your old 54's from? 14xx series?

do the 14xx series actions fit in a 16/18xx series stock?

thank you for the answer. What you have done is exactly what I intend to do, buy an older (and hopefully cheaper) gun just for the action and trigger. However, my plan seems to be spoiled at the beginning, in the few years I have not shot, the prices seem to have gone quite up. Would you have any advice where I could look? I am watching this forum and gunbroker.com.

I would appreciate if you could post some pictures and if you do not mind a brief description of what you have done namely weight wise. If such a topic is not appropriate for the forum, please do not hesitate to pm or e-mail me.

Nemo... In the pictures I posted earlier, the skeletonized thumbhole Fajen Silhouette stock in maple comes in at 26 oz... that's 3 oz MORE than the Pharr R/T... and allowed a box-stock 1411 prone rifle to make weight in standard without any barrel cutting. It DOES result in what is euphemistically called 'weight-forward balance'. Wear a truss. The point being that you can make weight with almost anything if you really set your mind to it. Don't get in a rush... take your time and you'll find a good used position/prone gun that'll work with only small mods. One of the things to watch for is a 5071 trigger... pretty much the same as the 5018 that comes on the 54.18MSR...

...and right now there's a 1413 Super Match for sale on Rimfirecentral.com classifieds for $650. Super match has a heavier bbl than a 1411 but, as discussed earlier, could be cut and crowned. They're out there...

I was at Pala, where some nice people let me shoot HP. But being a wimp I did not like the noise and recoil, so I opted for .22. I found, through a member on this forum that there is a club nearby, that holds .22 silhouette second Sunday in a month. So I have already invited myself to go and watch.

Thank you for the add on Rimfirecentral.com, I do believe that the rifles/actions are there, I just do not know where to look yet.

Nemo... patience. "All those nice rifles..." came one at a time and weren't always so nice to start with... You'll notice that three of them have been satin nickeled. Not because we have a silver fetish, nickel hides a lot of sins. And it's been going on for about 30 years now so, when you practice the 'always buy, never sell 54 actions', you can accumulate a pile of them. A humbling experience is to talk to Bart Eaton of Zanders about unloading PALLETS of Anschutz rifles. Don't know about 54.18 actions but I know there'll be some sporters for sale at Winnsboro...

I think Anschutz refers to this one as the 1408 trigger... a single stage adjustable (with a spring change) down in the ounces... a good trigger but not a 5071 (like the 5018 but for the older rifles) The sleeve around the reset spring is to keep it from making the 'sprooooiinnnggg' sound when you pull the trigger. The money this guy's asking isn't bad for an Annie, but it really isn't the rifle you are looking for. As I mentioned in the PM, you can sink a lot of money in a build and come away with something that doesn't work for you. (...and the chorus yells "AMEN") The rifle Pete describes above is already to go... will qualify as 'hunter' rifle and can shoot in standard class too. I think everyone here would urge you to go to a few matches to figure out what you like... that will tell you what you need to do.
