Hopefully the Guru will still let me shoot with him. Just ordered myself a 6.5mm Creedmoor (Savage model 12 Long Range Precision). I'm excited. Can't wait for it to get here... around Christmas time! Savage is running 21 weeks out. Doh! That is ok because I ordered my Shilen barrel and they told me... 7 months!!! GUH!! Good thing I have the double-duty 7-08 till the baby caliber comes. I was hoping to have this thing ready as my Standard rifle for the Missouri match in August. Dang, I hate getting new rifles in winter. It is tough to work up loads when it is snowing and blowing.

Savage specs this rifle out at 11 pounds (fatty!). So, once it arrives I'll be putting it on a diet and dumping it into a light HS Precision silhouette stock and screwing on the Shilen stainless match barrel to bring it down to 10lbs 2oz with a Leupold 24x strapped on top. It is going to be close but I'll get it under weight. I ordered 200 pieces of brass last night. Guess I can take my time prepping them!



It will be going in this stock, which I already have for a Rem700 and I'll recut the inlet and bed the Savage action. I'll be running this as a single shot so the inlet is simple. Pillar bedded.

Haha, I'm not "switching" Bob, I'm just dippin my toes in the water! My Hunter gun that I use now will remain my dedicated hunter class gun. I love the 7-08 and had fully intended on building this standard gun in 7mm as well. The deck just seemed stacked against me (long story) and in order to make it work on the Savage platform I had to go .260Rem or Creedmoor. (all their 7-08 rifles are pencil barrels)

The more I researched the Creedmoor though the more I was drawn to the darkside. It seems like a wicked accurate cartridge and should do just fine against those portly Rams.

Trent, you may find that stock a little on the portly side. I have the same one in the thumbhole stock and had to turn it into swiss cheese to make weight.

Mine is right at 38 ounces. It's got 3 heavy coats of enamel that I'll be removing, and I'll shorten the forearm to 8 inches. I've already removed part of the pistol grip where it sticks way down. Once I get the action bedded into the stock the I'll know if the stock needs to go on a big diet or not. I'll be going with my fixed power Leupold 24x and a set of DNZ aluminum 1-piece base/ring units to further conserve weight.

Why wait on a complete rifle if you are going to restock and rebarrel. You should check into purchasing one of the target action with the acutrigger. I think you could find one in stock and much cheaper that a complete rifle. That way you could go ahead and get the action bedded to the stock while you wait on the barrel to come in.

I'm using a coupon through Savage that is allowing me to purchase at a large discount. I'll be able to sell the factory stock (also HS Precision) and the factory barrel for what I am paying for the complete rifle. In the end the target action (the 12LRP has the target action with target accutriger) will have cost me nothing, and I would have had to wait 5 to 7 months for the Shilen barrel anyway so waiting for the rifle from Savage is no biggie. I'm using the 50% off certificate from Shilen that I won at the CBC this year so the barrel is costing me just under $200. I already have the stock sitting on my shelf, so after it is all said and done I will have built myself a semi-custom silhouette gun for about $200 since there is no gunsmithing involved with the Savage. This doesn't include the cost of Scope/rings, brass, dies and cleaning hardware though. ;)

It's not better than the 6.5x47 nor the .260Rem, it's just different. With standard loads it is about 100fps faster than the 6.5x47 due to the slightly bigger case capacity.

Remember this photo of you and I at your graduation from Guru Academy? You were so handsome in your ceremonial attire and proudly sporting your wisdom beard. The Jr. Guru turban looked stunning. I could not have been more proud. I had a framed 8x12 glossy of it hanging on the wall in my mud hut. Well, I burned it and pissed on the ashes.

I do remember that day Bob. I also remember you measuring my inseam for my uniform even though we wear robes. Dave told me later that this in fact is not a necessary measurement. I felt dirty but looked the other way and chalked it up to "the right of passage" into the 7-08 fold. I figured if letting you get near my "man-gina" was the final test of my worthiness... then so be it.

And just so you know, there was another that had a hand in my straying from your preachings. I won't tell you who it is, but his initials are B.O.N.N.E.R.
