Shooting with glasses if you are Near Sighted..

Right before I got my cataract fixed, I had trouble seeing the SB chickens and pigs and could not see the trukeys or rams at all. I realy shot a bad score at the CBC that year.

I think I'll have to invest is some nice ear plugs. I refuse to wear muffs as they hinder my hold and cheek weld, but a good set of ear plugs would probably help to solve that and to block out the heckling aswell.

Oh yeah I forgot to tell Baby Huey in my last post to WEAR SOME DAMN EARPLUGS! You might not think it is loud or damaging your hearing but you are what we call young ignant and if you want to HEAR someone call you old you better protect your hearing. It is not always the loudness of the sound but also the frequency and repetition that will make you deaf. I once worked where they did ultra sonic welding of plastic. You couldn't hear anything but you could feel it if you were by the machine and you had to wear muffs to operate it all the time.

Personally I wear plugs and then when I am shooting I put on muffs over that. Not to cancel out more shot sounds unless it is HP but to cancel out all the chatter and other spotters and shooters yacking. I just want to be able to hear my spotter. Hearing other crap can make the mind stray and so follows the bullet it seems with me.

THe ideal setup for shooting iron sights is to have about +0.75 diopters added to your distance vision. The +0.75 will shift your focal point to around 52" away from you; just the right amount so the front sight will be crisp, without giving up too much of the target clarity.

If you are nearsighted, and happen to need a -0.75 correction, removing your glasses would put your focus right where you want it (ignoring the safety issue). However, if your prescription is much off from -0.75, or if you have an astigmatism, shooting without glasses will leave you vision impaired.

If you shoot with distance corrected glasses, you will likely struggle seeing the front post consistently, which will cause some vertical stringing of your shot groups.

As to fogging, get a bar of soap, wet your finger, rub it on the soap, then smear the wet soap all over the inside of the lens. After it is dry, buff it till it is clear. THis will leave a very thin film of soap on the lens, which will resist fogging. The other big thing to reduce fogging is to wear a sweat band on your forehead. You look silly, but it will keep a lot of the sweat from running onto your face, where it evaporates and fogs the glasses.

A final thought is that there are hats with little propellors in the bill, and a little solar cel. Now those look really dorky, but I've had a shooter tell me they really work, generating just enough air flow to prevent fogging.

You talk about being near sighted with stigmatism .....That's me. 775 in left dominate eye and 600 in the other. My prescription shooting lenses have a little higher distance strength, with lower bifocal good up to 12 inches max to read the turret numbers and lines up close with clarity. The upper lens is good from 24 inches to infinity. These lenses have a light purple tint for black animals against sand berm and shooting under cover. Or indoor 50 foot, with black animals on white paper. Target contrast is more vivid with the purple tint than if I used my every day progressive clear lens glasses.

An optician suggested glasses with enough correction in the lower left lens for reading scope elevation, leaving the rest of the lens clear. I had hoped to hear of someone else taking the plunge first!

They can put the magnification of the bifocal any place on the glass. Some people I used to work with had it put at the top because of charts that were 6 feet above the ground. Along with the lower edge for normal reading.
Also try this experiment if you wear glasses. Look thru your scope and have someone put a dot on your lense at the point that coencides with the center of the crosshair in the scope. The dot will probably be 1/8 to 1/4 from the inside edge of the glass. Now as you are sitting here reading this cover your non shooting eye and and turn your head to bring that point that was marked on the glass to a few letters on this page. Is it still in focus and nice and crisp and sharp as it was when looking thru the center of the lense?? You may have to have the viewing area of the glass moved to the left towards the marked point on the glass. Also some people tilt the head forward causing them to look thru the upper portion of the glass. My shooting glasses sit higher on my nose because I do this and I also have the bifocal at the bottom for reading the scope settings.
