dot size question

Hi all, I've got a Weaver T-24 scope that I'd like to use for silhouette, the dot on this thing is really small. I'm thinking about sending it off to T.K. Lee to have a larger dot put on it. Have any of you had this done, and what size dot would you recommend? I've shot other peoples Leopold scopes with 1/2" min dots and like those. T.K. uses MOA measurements, anyone know if 1/2" min is equal to 1/2" MOA? or what size to order to get a similar sized dot?

FWIW I spent the extra for a used Leupold as opposed to a new Weaver because of dot size.

I looked through a 1/2" dot scope the other day and WOW, it was nice...

3/8, 1/2, or 5/8 all would be great choices.

Personally I'd recommend the 5/8's dot, but thats just me!

I had a 1/2 dot put in a Weaver T-24. I like it, but wish I had put in a larger dot. Just my $.02 opinion.

Lee is well recomended for dot work.

It's a personal thing, have used all sizes but good rule of thumb is dot size ought to be about the rifles group size in MOA. My two 6.5x20 Leopolds are 5/8 MOA one's on a Smallbore Hunter class other on a High Power Hunter class. That's smaller than the rifles group. Two Schuetzen Single shot Rifles have 1/2 MOA dots on 12x and 20x External adjustment scopes Given a choice would prefer they were all a bit larger. Don't think 1 MOA would be too big.

Big is my old K 2 1/2 Weaver with a TK Lee 4 MOA dot. Looks like a Pizza but sure is quick hunting. Points like a Shotgun

Two part answer. For load testing and bench rest testing, the larger dots are tough to use. Simply, because its hard accurately put them on a target for consistant placement. I've use 50yd smallbore position targets and also standard benchrest targets placed at 100yds with mixed results. You have to place the dot in the middle of the bull anf try yout best. For actual silohuette shooting a 1/2" dot is probably best. So, the answer is for testing leave the scope alone and when your done THEN send the scope out for a dor upgrade. Hope this helps.

I have 24x scopes with 1/2 minute dots on my smallbore and highpower rifles. I actually like a 3/8 dot just a little bit better. There may not seem like much difference there, but there is. Keep in mind that the measurement of the dot size is the diameter of the dot, and the area varies as the square of the diameter. That means that a 1/2 minute dot is actually four times the size of a 1/4 minute dot, because it covers four times the area. Similarly, that means that a 1/2 minute dot is actually 1.78 times the size of a 3/8 minute dot, or almost twice as big.
