Savage/Anschutz Model 64

I saw one of these on one of the auction sites and was wondering about it. What can you tell me about it? Good Silo gun? Value? How would it compare with the Remington 541-S? Looks interesting and money is not too bad.

They have a great reputation, and they are all Anschutz. As I understand the story, Anschutz wanted into the US market and so they partnered with Savage to get the distribution network until their brand was established.

Have one and its a terrific rifle. It is however, a dated rifle. Its a 64 action, which means its the smaller, lighter action. Lock time is no where near as fast as the 54 action. The triggers (if its the older single stage one) are very simple compared to newer 64's and certainly 54's. You can however can buy a newer (I have one) 2 stage 64 trigger and have it installed by a gunsmith. This does help tremendously. You can get them reliably down to the 10oz or less range. The stocks are alot lighter than the newer guns. It was my starter position gun and I then modified the stock for silohuette. They are (if not that worn) very accurate, shooting under an inch at 100yds with good ammo. Good buy for the money.

I had one and I thought it was a good gun. I replaced it with a new 54-18 repeater.

I also had one for a short time, it was not drilled and tapped for scope mounts forcing you to use the rail. Normally that would not be a problem however the path of the bolt made it impossible to mount the scope far enough back for a erect head position. I sold it to a fellow silhouette shooter that was trying to get his wife into the game but never did, I'll ask him about it this weekend.
