10/22 stock target model upgrades

As for the 10-22's extracted hot brass, I got burned by an extracted round on top of my foot. I was wearing those super-comfy "crocks" sandals, and the extracted round lodged itself just inside the top where it seared a case profile on top of my foot! i wore that scar for 6 months before it faded. I was at the firing line shooting when the shell burned me. i was hopping around and my spotter couldn't figure out what was wrong!

There's nothing wrong with a fella shooting a 10-22. I own and compete with 1712 and 54.18msr for several years now. I recently bought a Clark 10-22 barreled action for making a Sportsman Team Challenge rifle. Turns out it's as accurate as a 1712, but trigger is not as crisp. No surprise. I now wish I'd bought the midweight barrelled action model with a Kidd trigger, which would be 100% hunter legal if in the right stock. I honestly think that version would give the 1712 equal competition. Especially if custom ordered with 24" barrel. Anyone have one configured this way? One of these days when I have more money than brains I'll order one and drop it into a laminate stock that's patterned after Pharr's RTS. It should make weight and be really snappy to shoot and a benefit in windy conditions.

It's sighted in at 40 yards and using cheap 20$ box ammo the holes were touching so that's promising.

I should at least be able to punch the chickens and pigs with it.

true if you stick with it you WILL end up with bolt gun...mostlikly aan anschutz. shoot that 10/22 until you WANT to upgrade, or you find it limiting, if you are puttig up 15-20 scores and borrow a bolt and put up a 25 then its time to change. learn the game, love the game and see where t takes you.

as far as never seeing a ruger take the top. we have a guy who shoots a 77/22 and does very well with it, he also has a kimber and sako, and shoots the ruger just as good. if it fits YOU then its the right gun.

I started shooting Sil. with a Ruger 10/22, and it got me all the way to AAA class. Every part on it is still stock, but I have tweaked the gun considerably. Someone else suggested www.rimfirecentral.com for ideas, and that is good advice.

The three best moderately priced ammo in my 10/22 were: Eley Silhouex (discontinued), SK Standard Plus, and Winchester Super X Subsonic. I tried more expensive ammos, but there is a limit to what a stock 10/22 can do.

The only mechanical quirk I could never overcome was the 10/22's slow lock time. Good shot follow through becomes critical if you use the Ruger.

So bench test a bunch of ammunitions, find what your gun shoots best, and have some fun!
