Weaver V-16 vs. V-24

Time for me to move up to a better scope for silhouettes.

Do people have an opinion on the V-16 vs. the V-24. To me, the advantage of the V-16 is that it has 1/4 MOA clicks. The V-24 has 1/8 MOA clicks, which I think are less convenient, but much greater power range. The cost difference isn't that great. Do people think the greater reach of the V-24 is worth the hassle of the 1/8 clicks?

IMHO, you'll want the 24. Even with the 1/8" turrets.

Best bet is save a little more coin and go for the Leupold FX-3 with 1/2" dot in 25 or 30 power.

16 is pretty small....

FWIW, it's perfect for air rifles theough!

I have a V16 on one of my rifles and it works just fine. I would prefer a bigger dot than the factory offers but that could be fixed. The big advantage is that if you shop you can get one for half the cost of the the FX111 that Leupold sells. So for my money if I wanted an extra scope the V16 is a great value.

Post got me thinking so yesterday afternoon put a Smallbore Chicken in the backyard at 40 meters. Put two spotting scopes on stands. 30x60mm Fixed power Gold Ring Leopold and 25x50mm Fixed Gold Ring Leopold focused both on the chicken,

As the light faded looked to see which would resolve the best. About the same resolution, 30 was bigger but not any brighter. You would think 60mm would be better but the extra 5 power robs it's resolution.

Might try your scope same way cranking the variable ring

Just for the record I use a Leupold FX-3 in 12 power.

I would go with the 16 power; plenty of magnification and enough field of view so /i can see what animal I am on.

I have looked through a 24 power scope once and while it showed great detail, the field of view was too limited for my tastes.

I don't think that any of those things will greatly affect brightness one way or another. The quality of the glass and the light it allows to pass is the limiting factor. Some glass sucks even on bright sunny days.

IMO you would be best off with a Bushnell 4200 6-24x with the 1/4" Dot if you can make weight with it and you should be able to in smallbore. Right now they are even running a $75 mail in rebate till the end of October. I just ordered another 4200 in 8-32x from Chicken George to go on the last rifle I have in need of glass. I would recommend you get the 8-32x but it only comes with Multi-X crosshairs and you have to send it off to get a 3/8" Dot installed for another $100 if you want a dot. But then you could shoot anywhere from 8x on up to 32x in the future. The clarity and brightness of 4200's is not even close to being touched by others in that same price range or even scopes at twice the price. Plus they are tough as nails and repeat beautifully.

Don't worry about the 1/8" clicks. They are not hard to use and if you are going to forget to change you sight setting you are going to forget whether it is 1/4" a click or 1/8", a brain fart is a brain fart.

I like the higher power scopes. It gives me a good excuse for cross firing.
