Boats,

Now that you know what the problem is, you can inspect the replacement rifle before wasting any more time on it.

Good Luck!

Evelio,

We'll have to talk some time about the Anschutz design. I won't clutter up the thread any more, but it is not the best they could have done IMO.

Cheers,

Rick

My bet is this was a plan old screw up. I don't know how they set headspace when they barrel up. If the slots were pre cut how much you face off the barrel stub would effect how the slot intersects the chamber. Or would they face off chamber then cut the slots ? Screw in barrels extractor cuts would come last.

The barrel tenon lenght ( from the face of the chamber to the recoil lug shoulder ) is what determines the head space, then the chamber is cut, and then the extractor slots. A notch is also cut in the bottom of the tenon to clear the front tongue on the loading ramp, that is what I use to line up everything prior to the final barrel installation.
The actual chamber on a rim fire don't have anything to do with the head space, since it is a straight case, versus a center fire round that actually head space in the internal chamber shoulder.

To add to what Evelio said, it is no small thing to correct the extractor groove on a factory barrel. The barrel/receiver is an interference fit. The "official" way to remove a barrel (after removing the pin) is to use a hydraulic press to push the barrel out of the receiver. (The barrel can be driven out with a mandrel and sledge hammer, but that risks damage to the barrel in doings so.) After completing the work the barrel is supposed to be chilled and/or the receiver warmed up so that it can be forced back in. It is just not something to be casually undertaken.

It is little wonder that the vast majority of 'smiths thread the receiver when rebarreling an Anschutz.

Let Anschutz (and the dealer) sweat this one out, but check the rifle over very carefully when you receive it back (or as likely as not a replacement rifle). Somebody screwed up at the factory.

I hope they can get this resolved quickly for you.

One would really wonder how the test target was successfully completed with the rifle in this condition.

I bought a brand new pistol once that the chamber was machined off from the bore..... there was a spent casing in the box in
a envelope with the serial number to that pistol on it... seeing how I had to use pliers to remove the case from the chamber
there is no way on Gods green earth the case in that envelope came from that pistol....

Needless to say, It was warrantied and I have never given much thought to spent cases or test targets since....

Got a call from Styer who handles Anschutz service. Gunsmith said he looked at it, test fired, and thinks the chamber is too tight. Wanted my ok to open it up. If it won't shoot two 60 shot matches it's no good for the job. If it won't shoot smaller groups than the Kimber I am upgrading not good either. I bought it for the trigger however if the " Opened up" chamber is not going to produce good results It's going right back.

No choice but let him try and see for my self when returned.

Got it back from Styer Friday.

Re-mounted the scope went to the indoor range nearby and ran 100 rounds of Winchester T 22 through. Every one extracted fine. Will take it to the Club Silhouette range this week re-zero at match distance and shoot our Smallbore match next Sat. Before I sent it back bolt closed real hard on the T22, not as hard on RWS R 50. Now it closes easy on the T22. Will see about the RWS.

Ought to note was determined to fix it my self. Once in Styers hands they keep me informed, gunsmith even called twice before and after he worked on the rifle. I guess the chamber was too tight. He said he polished only did not run a chamber reamer in the barrel.

Trigger is very good, thats why I bought it.

That's great! I'm glad to hear a customer service story that ends well. (Yeah, I know...some will say it shouldn't have happened to begin with, but stuff does happen)

Good for you Boats.

Update, since I was so public with Anschutz problems. Had the rifle back from Styer USA about a month now, little over 500 rounds through it 4 matches half a dozen practice sessions. Works fine no extraction problems at all. Guess the chamber was too tight polish job was needed.

How does it group polished ? I don't know, don't have much faith in groups outdoors with round forend sporters telling me anything. I did run half a box of R50 though it on a fairly good condition day 50 yards from a simple front rest. No flyers tight slightly oblong group wind causing the left and right. About half inch high. One day if I get real good conditions and have a rifle more suited to bench work as control will test it more carefully. For now I am happy with results.

Sure does have a nice trigger
