i have a mossberg 44us and it has a heavy barrel on it.can i use it in smallbore hunter?

I just measured my 44US and it is 0.800" at the receiver and 0.747" at the muzzle. It gradually reduces in size from the receiver to the muzzle so technically it is tapered. The rules simply state that the barrel must be tapered. You will see hunter guns with MUCH heavier (but shorter) barrels than the Mossberg 44US.

0.053" isn't a lot of taper though so you may want to carry a cheap set of calipers in your range bag so that you can prove the taper to anyone that wants to contest it. I have yet to shoot at any club that would do that though. By the rules, word for word, your barrel is legal.

Those old Mossberg 44us lead-lapped barrels are dang accurate! Sure wish they had better triggers though. Cheers!
