Anschutz 1712 Two Stage Trigger Adjustment

Post by M1SICKPUPPY »

I have an Anschutz 1712D WITH TWO STAGE TRIGGER. I am having problems with the two stage trigger. From the first time I shot it I cannot get a definable first and second stage. I have diligently followed the instructions in the owner manual and just cannot get it to adjust. Sometimes it seems to work just fine for three or four shots, then nada, It is acting like a single stage trigger with a borderline 2lb pull. I can send it back to where I purchased it and they will adjust it, but I do not want to go through the hassel of finding a reliable FFL dealer, i.e. getting them to fax each other their FFL without me making numerous trips and phone calls. So my question: Is there anyone in Northeast Florida that I can take it to that know how to correctly adjust the Anschutz 5109 two stage trigger?

There are 2 different kinds of 2 stage trigger for the 17 serries. The cheep one with only weight of pull adjustment and the expensive one that you can adjust each stage by itself.

If you have the expensive one. from front to back on the bottom. 1) First stage adjustment in 2 stage triggers. I believe it controls the amount of travel on the first stage. 2) Catch overlap. 1 and 2 are in front of the trigger. 3) Backlash adjustment. 4) First stage weight. 5) Trigger pull weight. 3, 4, and 5 are behind the trigger. 5 is the farthest one back. I think you need to lighten the first stage so you cna feel the difference between first and second stage. It does take a little time to get use to the 2 stage. Good luck.

Is the rifle new and under warranty or used?

If you can't find someone to adjust the trigger, you can remove the trigger and send it to a person like Neal Stepp who can adjust it then mail it back. They are a modular design and if you can use a screwdriver, you should be able to remove it and send it in. There isn't a need to use an FFL to ship the rifle for service if you choose to send the entire rifle.

I strongly suggest you try and use the trigger adjustment instructions on page 38 in this manual.

You have two screws in your trigger, the one in the front controls the pull weight, set it to where you have about 1/8" sticking out. The other screw is on the side of the trigger lever, this is where you set the second stage, it is real sensitive, if you screw it all the way in the second stage is gone, start backing it out about 1/8 of a turn at the time, and keep dry firing it ( it won't hurt to dry fire ) you will start to notice the second stage as you back it out, keep doing it until you feel a positive stop between the first and second stage.

Thanks for the responses. I have contacted the store from whom I purchased it from and I can send the rifle back to them for adjustment. I was just hoping that there was someone nearby that I could take it to so that I could minimize wait time to get it done. I guess I am just a little eager to shoot me some of them pesky chickens.

Yours is a 5018 trigger, completely different animal than the trigger on a 1712.

Yes sir, it still looks like a can of malaria germs, when you look at it. Maybe a watch is more fitting. Lot of fine engineering.

Speaking about the Trigger on the 1712, I have a newer barreled action I bought it new last year SN 31247X I cannot get the weight down to what I need for offhand shooting. I need a trigger that is 8oz or less. What are my options for getting there. I am not opposed to buying a new trigger if thats what it takes. Thank you

Call Neal Stepp at ISS (817-595-2090) and order a light spring, he usually has them right in stock. If uncomfortable in changing it out yourself (its easy) you can send it to Neal and he will do it for you.

Sorry, but that trigger even with no spring can't be set down to 8 ounces and be reliable or safe, specially for field hunting.

I bought a new 1712, probably moved up too quickly for my level of experience...as in totally a neophyte but I am getting older and thought if not now, when. Still, I had some experience such as an older brno with a two stage trigger. So, I expected that I would feel pull weights for each stage. It was a surprise that upon receiving the 1712 that the first stage felt like zero weight with distance on the pull until I hit the second stage which was about 1.5lbs. By my request when purchasing the rifle, a "light" spring was innstalled in place of the factory spring. What bothered me was that I wanted to feel some weight on the first stage. So I read page 38 from the on line manual and I was furious that I didn't have a printed manual that came with the rifle. Besides the brevity and confusing aspects of the instructions, he model of the trigger was not even the model illustrated in the .pdf file. I wrote an email to Anschutz. The response was something along the lines they don't have written manuals in order that they can up date it as needed, like when they install triggers with new model numbers.errr. I then proceeded to just ignore page 38. I fiddled and got the first stage up to a little under .5lbs. I passed the LGS and asked the most experienced gunsmith in the area to give me his blessing. He dry fired and put a digital trigger gauge on the rifle. Then gave me his blessing. However, what must me an anal gene I could not let things lie. Everything that I had read said that the two screws involved were interactive and needed to be treated as such. Plus, I began to feel that the second stage was not breaking crisply. So, back to page 38. I stayed calm and eventually saw logic embedded in the back and forth verbiage. Yes, it now breaks crisply and the dealer verified that the trigger model does not allow for individual stage pull weight adjustment. Plus, the only way to significantly impact second stage pull weight is by changing the spring.

By memory, I'm thinking that the model on the trigger is 5109. Not positive. Is this really "the" cheap trigger. Considering the price of the rifle compared to my cz sil model, there has to be a cheaper one.

I do wonder...How did I buy a rifle that was so expensive and long to prove that I can hit little steel chickens at 40 meters, yet not have a written manual (small potatoes), not be able to feel any pull weight on the first stage, find out that most empty shells will never leave the breech on their own steam, and that it will be roll of the dice if I let Steyr conduct a fix for the ejection issue. That last issue deserves its own thread.

Back to the trigger installed. Page 38 really can be followed, if patient and literal. Set backs do have a way of providing some teachable moments. But, do most of you guys who enjoy shooting the 1712 find that you prefer a two stage trigger with some pull weight on the first stage? If so, can this so called less expensive trigger be tweaked to do so? And, when it comes to the rules, is the 2lb minimum a combination of the pull weights for each stage?

So far, and I need much more experience, I am not finding that a very light pull weight is helping with hitting my paper chickens. The CZ with good glass is more my weight class. Hardly going to give up on the 1712. Practice practice. I am still a young'n as measured by experience. Once I find my way through a fix for the ejection failure clouds will lift. Meanwhile, curious about whether or not I can expect anything more from the first stage.????

With the help of the others I am gaining a little better understanding of this trigger .WPhill you said (impact second stage pull weight is by changing the spring.) Is to install a (lighter spring). Could someone please direct me to some sort of reference to identify this lighter spring. A part number would really help. If I cannot get the second stage weight down light enough to satisfy me is their any other trigger that I could purchase to replace it with.
