I used my 5 year old 39a for 2 years with a Simmons 6-20X44, dot scope. I bought my CZ 452 American 2+ years ago as an upgrade as suggested beginner rifle in our sport. A gunsmith got the trigger down to 2-1/2 lb pull on the 39a.

To make Hunter weight, I had to remove the front sight, the wood screws for strap, the windage scope cap, BUT I had a set of REAL HEAVY steel 1' tall Rings mounted on top the weaver receiver. The tall ring dimension is from the top of the receiver to the bottom of the scope. I used it Std class too, a few times. I got good, acceptable, groups using Aquila Match Rifle. If I remember, 1-1/2 inch group[s] off sand bags at 109 meters on a calm afternoon. I just gave it to a fellow at our club last night to fix the FTF and FTE problem. It had been put away for 2+years with that problem .

I used to get a lot of looks and, "Can I try it," from my fellow shooters. Some would show up on only our Saturday Mo. matches from further distances, and they'd be looking my rig over. I want to get it back to working order and use every once in a while at the club. It was my very first firearm 5 years ago at age 65. I am still kidded about shooting on the wrong side of the stand. Have fun with your 39a like I did. I did not rush in and buy a bolt rifle. That 39a served the purpose. I got tired of the loading the stupid tube with 5 rounds.

Pick good ammo, practice with it, learn your scope settings, listen and watch. I predict you'll be solidly hooked by the time you drive home from the match.

And have fun, you don't have to win every time. The guys at Rio Salado are easy to shoot with - Brian usually has good prizes too. Please Note - the match is the 19th - 3rd Saturday. If you meet Cole - tell him I said "hello" from Tucson.

Well I shot my first match today . Used the 39a lever gun . Cheap Simmons 3x9 . Hunter class . Scored a 8 out of 60 . Had ALOT of fun . I have a month to practice before the the next match . I'll be looking around for a bolt gun in the mean time . Those targets sure do jump & duck a lot ! Seems to me I need to work on technique alot . Mostly holding still .

The point is it sounds like you had fun! Welcome to the brotherhood of the dancing chickens.

It gets easier as you get to know what to expect at the line each time. Just stick with it and you'll be surprised at how your scores will get better!

First, welcome to the addiction, second, hang on to the 39A you can shoot it in a lever action version of this game with iron sights at much larger targets....also a blast! Bolt gun is better for the smaller targets though. Third great shooting for your first time out, as far as holding still, that comes with practice and having stuff that fits you.

Thanks for the kind words ! I forgot to mention , great bunch of shooters who allowed me to play 20 questions today . Between them & all the great info on this website , I felt about as prepared for the match as possible . I can't wait to shoot the next one

I always liked shooting at the Rio Salada club - a friendly bunch to shoot with (next time ask them about the big arrow that says "< Phoenix". If you ask 6 people you'll get 6 different answers...it is from WWII, it was a Boy Scout project, it is directions for UFOs...

If you use that lever gun for the Cowboy Silhouette match you get to shoot much larger targets - feels like your cheating after a smallbore match. Ben Avery has a well run Cowboy Silhouette match with all pneumatic targets. And our Tucson Lever Gun match is next Saturday...we feed you too (gourmet hot dogs last month). You'll have to take the scope off, but the targets are significantly larger.
