when adjusting a 5018 trigger for hunters class #2 requirements are both stages added up to make #2 or is stage 2 to meet the weight,apart from personal taste how are yours set,24oz stage 1 and 10oz stage 2? I am looking to make some changes and would like some experienced advice

Standard trigger pull gage is a stack of weights hung from a hook. Put 2 lbs on lift the weights by the empty cocked rifles trigger. Snaps it's too light holds, ok.

In practice 2 stage like a 1712 takes the first stage out on lift then holds. Mine is as light as possible 2nd stage, never had AD. Used to have a 64ms that was mushy 2nd could not be trusted or fixed.

Both stages added together to equal 2+ pounds. Differnt folks set it up differntly but as Boats said,
if the trigger will pick up 2#'s with out releasing the sear it's your personal
prefernce wether it's light first, heavier second, heavy first, lighter second or single stage.

Not sure how you would measure how much of each stage. My old Trigger pull weight set is 1/4 increments. I guess you could put 1 3/4 on see if it hits the stop, Then add the last 1/4 see if it holds.

Will the new electronic gauges read the stop ?

I use a Lyman digital trigger gauge when setting up triggers. With the gun in a vise, very slowly pull back on the trigger with the gauge while watching the displayed pull pressure. The pressure where it stops moving through the first stage and hits the higher resistance of the second stage without moving is the weight of the first stage. When it stops against the second stage, you can very lightly let off and approach the second stage again to be sure to read the gauge right at the point that the movement of the first stage stops before adding any pressure to try to pull through the second stage.

Jason, what do you like your stages set at?

I have varied over the years. I think the Anschutz 5022 trigger on my highpower rifle is set to 24 ounces on the first stage and 10 ounces on the second, for a total of 34 ounces (2lb 2oz). It could be 22 and 12, though. I only remember the total was 34 ounces so I had a cushion for picking up the 2lb weights reliably and the first stage was about twice the second.

I don't know what my 1712 2nd stage is but would guess it's about the same 10-12 oz.

I do know my Double Set's on Schuetzen and BPCS rifles just barely hold the 1/4 lb weight = 4 oz. 4 oz is very light, both rifles have finger rest to keep you off the trigger until on target. Rest your finger on the trigger while moving around it's going to go off when not expected.

I don't think 4 oz would be a good idea for most people with a Silhouette rifle, some may be able to handle it not me.

I shot a single stage 2 pound trigger last year. I can't wait for my new 1712 to get here so I can see what its like with a 12 oz second stage. I just drooled a little on my keyboard

I personally can't do the heavy first, light second. Problem is I pull the heavy first but as I am concentrating and coming down on the animal to break the shot my mind lets go of the weight and then all of a sudden I have to repull the first and then second stage. I tried it and it just didn't work. I now have a .5 first and 1.5 second and it works much better. It's more like I have a 1.5# trigger with some take up.

The only reason I am throwing that out there is so if someone trys it and has the same problem they aren't the only one.

Some female Steigers shoot single stage 2# triggers..... Just sayin.....

cedestech, I pretty much agree with you. If the first stage is too heavy and the "wall" isn't easily felt then I think I tend to start creeping OFF of the trigger as my concentration shifts to the target. I think I may need to try something like a 3/4lb 1st stage and a 1.25lb second stage.
