Newbe question about optics

Recently I purchased an Anschutz rifle (22lr) for the purpose of shooting metallic silhouette targets. The gun came with a Leupold XII 6x18x40 scope. Being new to the sport, I would like to know if this scope has enough magnification and is it repeatable enough so that it would allow one to be competitive? Any help for this newbe would be deeply appreciated.

That's a great combo. A lot of us use the fx4 25x42 fixed or the 6.5x20. The 6-18 you got has the newer lens coatings that the fx4 does so it's actually clearer that the 6.5-20. At the top end you're really not giving up that much magnification wise and it might help you until you get a handle on your wobble.

The repeatability of Leupold's is what makes them the go to for this sort.

Get your hands on some good ammo and you're off and running with the best of em!

Speaking of ammo, what would be a good ammo to practice with? to compete with? Also, does anyone know where I can get a manual for an Anschutz 1808 MSR? I'd like to know everything I can about my recently purchased rifle?

Leupold's VXII 6-18x40 is an under-appreciated scope that simply got overshadowed by the VX3 6.5-20x40. Glass and internals are excellent, and it will focus close enough for air-rifle for about two thirds the cost of a VX3. I've always thought they were a bargain.

Great scope to start out with. Don't try to jump magnification to fast if you don't feel it aids you. I shot 24x for several years before jumping to 32x and now I boost that as well to around 38-40x which is more than enough lol.

Just test it out with a good benched box test and make sure it is tracking correctly since it is new to you. Once you verify that you are good to go. If it doesn't ship it to Leupold and tell them to make it so

Many don't find a need to go over 24x and some go low as 12x or less. Then I know of one that prefers 60X!!!!

As for ammo I used to recommend practicing with CCI SV in the paper box but with all the recent crazy prices and scare rimfire ammo I have seen it selling for as much or more than SK+ so I would just shoot SK+ if it shoots in your rifle of course. If CCI SV was still 1/2 the price or less of SK it is great practice ammo and I would save the SK for matches but that's not the case anymore right now. Hopefully one day things will equalize back out. I actually saw a case of SK and a case of CCI SV selling for both over $600 on gunbroker this past week Even SK isn't up to $500 yet most places and available last time I checked. CCI should be $250 a case normally.

Thanks for the info regarding the scope and ammo. I was surprised to see how much 22lr cost these days. Anyhow, I still need to locate an Anschutz 1808 MSR manual. Does anyone know where I might get my hands on one. From what I hear, the 1808 MSR is a relatively rare gun so I guess the manual that goes with it would also be hard to find. Again, any help in pointing me in the right direction would be deeply appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!
The more I read about silhouette shooting the more questions I seem to have. It seems to me that some matches are shot in yards and some are shot in meters. Can someone tell me the exact distances that will be used for competitive silhouette shooting? Sorry for all the questions.

Sanctioned smallbore matches are shot at 40, 60, 77 and 100 meters or yards, per section 6.4 of the 2005 rule book. Glad I looked it up, since I started to say just meters since the matches I've shot all used meters.

I went to the site you suggested. However, none of the manuals will open when I click on them. As a result, I can't download any of the manuals into my computer. Is anyone else having this problem with the Anschutz web site? Does anyone know how to open these folders?

You should get an email with the .pdf files attached, and a link to Adobe Reader in case you need to install that.
