De-Resonator - Limbsaver

Post by teetertotter »

I have a 452 American w free floated barrel and bought a Limbsaver De-Resonator. I read somewhere that if free floated barrel, push the Limbsaver on about 1/2" on muzzle end. That a good starting point? I wanted to see if anyone has experience with this or any other de-resonator.

I'm not too sure about that. 1/4 turn on my tuner changes the group size so............ be sure to move it in real small incruments.

I have a 452 American that's free floated and mine shoots best flush with the end of the barrel.

Thank you for the advise with starting point. Come April/May, when winter has passed, we will try it out at the outdoor range.
$10.00 was a cheap investment to see if makes any difference with my 6-24 SIL Sightron scope using Aquila Match Rifle. The b/4 and after should be interesting, if any difference with my equipment.

What's the goal specifically here? If it's to make it better for shooting in silhouette matches, be aware that it will likely not be allowed in smallbore hunting rifle class, depending on how much the match director sticks to the rules.

It is allowed. My rule book is at our Silhouette range shack and recall having to look up sometime ago. Greg Engel, several time Jr. National Champion with 6 Grand Slam Medals, attended our 2012 State Championship and had his own custom rubber de-resonator at the very end of his barrel. We have one fellow that uses a metal type, NOT an Tuner, and another that uses the Limbsaver. Jon

The de-resonator is indeed a tuner, even if a cheap one, and I don't see why it would be allowed in hunter class if a more conventional tuner or barrel weights would not be allowed. Unless I see an official ruling from the silhouette committee saying otherwise, I'd discuss the issue with a shooter at one of the matches that I run and might let it slide the first time. I've seen quite a few things that were clearly against the rules be allowed at even big matches, especially for juniors.

I don't think it's legal on a couple of points, but would not rule it out it if showing up at my match first time. Win using one the other competitors would protest it for sure. Then the yes or no goes to the shooter jury picked from the good old boys that shoot the match without using one.

My routine has always been to stay well within all equipment rules, so I am not thinking about equipment rules when shooting. Besides device that promises "sub MOA with over the counter factory ammo" is overstating a position, to put it politely

Reply might be interesting but don't confuse Greg with what's going to happen at a local match. It's rule book, match director, shooter jury. After the match MD fills out a form that has a check box for any rules that need review or interpretation. Silhouette committee gets the forms at annual meeting. They may or may not rule on muzzle devices

Don't read me wrong I think Greg is a great guy and does a very difficult job well. While we may listen to what he says Greg is match director at the nationals has no say on anything at local matches or rules. Silhouette committee makes the rules all we do is follow them best we can.

Two years ago we had a jury ruling and the 3 most experienced and long time shooters interpreted the ruling as NOT a tuner. They deal with frequency or barrel bounce is how I look at it. One of them has a Hoen devise at the end of his barrel and the other a De-resonator. I have not heard back from the NRA and I also included the HOEN devise.

I am McDonalds right now and believe it is the 3.16 ruling and then you have to relate to the classes..etc. It can get confusing over interpretation, IMO. I just wanted to bring it up again before our summer season gets under way. I copied the 3 other individuals in our group when asked for an NRA ruling. Jon

Umm.. that's the definition of a tuner.

If wanting to pass the Limbsaver would pick a shooter jury that had something hanging off the end of their rifles too. I would allow it then let the competitors sort it out themselves if one came to my match. No time to spend on rifle add on's pro or con. Jury of experienced shooters at our club would not have tuners on their rifles, In fact nobody has one. That’s the rub, inconsistent ruling club to club. Be better if the rule book said anything goes or nothing goes. I would go for anything Silhouette class nothing Hunter class. Nobody is going to agree with that simple rule.

The rules say pretty specifically that a tuner is allowed. Heres from the NRA rules for hunter class rifles:

Barrel: A hunting style contoured barrel that tapers from chamber to
muzzle. Bull barrels are not permitted. A factory tuner that does not
act as a muzzle brake or compensator is permitted. Maximum barrel
length is 26 inches, including tuner. (See Rule 3.16.1).

And 3.16.1 just says muzzle brakes and compensators are not allowed. So is this discussion mainly on if the limbsaver is a 'Factory Tuner'?
I'm a newbie, but if I was on a jury and saw this rule I would say its fine.

I have only seen that used to address the Browning system that can either be a muzzle brake or a tuner without a muzzle brake. That comes integrated with the barrel from Browning. The de-resonator is definitely not a factory tuner.
