Some have asked for more information about the matches and what is going on in or near Raton.
1. In the past the practice day before the matches was included in the range fee the NRA silhouette dept. paid for use of the ranges. If you want to show up before that it will probably cost you a daily range fee or you can join the WC gun club. You can go to the NRAWC web site to find out how much each of these will cost or just call them. Usually the range fee will cover all ranges and in your case would be good for the HP Sil range the SB sil range or maybe the site in range. It would be best to call and talk to the Program Director to check and see if the range you want to use will be free.
2. This should have been first but you being from a humid climate DO NOT forget to drink a lot of water all day. The humidity will be around 15 % and will go up to 40 or 50% when it rains then back down in an hour or so. In other words you sweat but you do not get wet because it dries right away.
3. Things to do. Some nice little shops in Raton and some good places to eat. Nothing fancy. Cimarron has an old hotel that is kind of neat to look around, watch out for the ghosts. Also a fellow down there that makes some nice gun stocks. More small shops.
4. On the way to Cimarron about 5 miles past the cold beer sigh is a road to the west. I think it is number 1950 if you decide to follow this try to stay on the main track and it will end up over at Amalia then into Costilla Nm. Fill your tank and take some food. A good days trip, dirt and gravel have good tires and your spare tire ready. From Costilla you can go north into Co. or south to Questa, then either to Taos or east to Red River and back to Cimarron.
5. If you go NE out of Raton you will find Sugarite state park then come back a bit and head east up Yankee Canyon and up onto Johnson Mesa then head east over to Folsom which is near where the Folsom spear point was found. Used to be a good BBQ place there and a small museum in an old store.
6. South out of Folsom you will find the Capulin volcano. The movie there is very good and you get to go up into the volcano. A the small town of Capulin there used to be a good place to eat. Likewise the over at the town of Des Moines. To the south of that the big mountain is Sierra Grande.
7. If you like the tourist traps and all that kind of stuff head up to Taos. Also some interesting Indian things in that area to look at.
8. And for the old timers there are some dinosaur tracks over near Clayton, Nm.
All in all a lot of things to do and look at. Remember that part of the country was settled before the Mayflower landed so there is a lot of history in the area.
9. If you want to do a bit of wandering around in the brush wear long pants and boots. There are some of those pesky prairie rattlers around. Sometimes they rattle sometimes they don't.
10. If you camp keep your food in your car and not your tent. The critters can get into anything to find a snack.
11. At the south end of Raton by the Sonic go west on 555 10 or 15 miles to look at elk in the evening. West on that road about 25 miles is a coal mine and then the locked gate of the Vermejo Ranch. A good place to fish and hunt if you have lots of money.
12. You can also head east from the WC and wander over around Sierra Grande if it rains stay home a lot of dirt tracks and wash crossings.
