Rem 700, Wooster stock, bedding?

More expensive to feed, but worth it.

Rem 700, Wooster stock, bedding?

Post by OnaginOffagin »

Need advice..... I have a pretty fair shooting Remington 700 Hunter SS in 260 Remington, factory barrel. It shot pretty well several years ago in the factory stock....got me a 27 with it once..... but then the son was heading for college, and I got priced out of the high power game. I also had bought an early Steve Wooster stock....I shot the gun in the stock once, but with no bedding or pillars...just stuck it in there and pulled the trigger!

Now, I kinda got the high power bug again, got me a nice old Leupold for the rifle, and want to get back in...... The question: the rifle should be bedded, right? Pillar-bedded? What kind of bedding compound should I use in the Wooster stock (there are no competent smiths in this area, none whatsoever, so I'll have to do it myself...)? Is there anything I should especially watch out for? Any advice and comments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Are you coming over to Pe Ell on sunday for the hp match? I've got a loaner rifle you could use. Crap. Forgot your left handed for a second. If you've got the stock and barreled action already I'd just hand it off to Steve to work his magic. He's bedded 4 rifles for me now and I'm a very happy camper.

Very generous offer! Thank you! But I'm already committed Sunday... I'll be at the next one.... I also sent a email to Steve and immediately got back the word.... he uses Marine-Tex, and pillars. I think I can do it with the help of a techie/nerd friend here who beds his own rifles all the time....... thank you again! But, ummmm, I'm not left-handed! :D :D :D :D

For a fiberglass stock I use Marinetex or Devcon. I also use aluminum pillars. This gives a solid platform for the action.
See my latest build below Rem 700 Wooster stock. I also check bedding tension on action after bedding is done to confirm no stress on action using dial indicator. this is one way to eliminate variables for accuracy consistency.
