Modified Suhl 150 for Silhouette ?

Does the lack of a functioning safety cancel any thought of modifying a Suhl 150 or Suhl action for Silhouette ? I own two Suhl 150 3P rifles and wish I could convert one of them to a standard Silhouette rifle. I own four European 3P rifles (Vostok Ural,Valmet Mod 70 and the Suhl rifles, none of these have a safety lever, all are single shot target rifles.

I would think so. They usually check the safety when they are checking in guns. And the Hunter rules say:

Trigger: Trigger pull shall not be less than 2 pounds. In the event of
an accidental discharge, range officers shall require adjustment of
the trigger or replacement of the rifle. Rifles must be equipped with
a functional safety.
All safety features, including any manual safety, must be functional

If you're going for a standard class rifle, not hunter class, I wouldn't think it would matter. You'll also have more overall weight allowance and no 2lb minimum trigger pull weight.

I am brand new to Silhouette. Started with my 1950 Marlin 39 in a Cowboy .22 match last month and I am hooked. I plan to shoot Hunter and Standard eventually. Trying to decide on modifying or selling off one of my Suhl 150 rifles.The lock time and trigger on the Suhl 150 is amazing and shooting Suhls in 3P Smallbore has spoiled me.

It is ofter wiser to sell a specialized rifle rather than converting it.

Assuming STD only use I think weight and configuration changes will be more of a consideration than lack of safety. (my STD rifles in past have sported Jewel triggers, no safety). What I'm saying is: how much modifying will be required to meet STD criteria??? They are magnificent position rifles, old timers converted the actions into bench rest rifles. If it meets rules however,,,,it was sure designed for position shooting.
Might want to seriously look at rule book, if it's a go as is go for it.... if different stock, etc. is necessary, might consider different action before spending money and get one with safety that can be used in both classes.

We used to have a couple of marine shooters come to local matches...12lb .308 with boxes of gold metal match...isssued ....they weren't eligible for the big prize money ( ) of course, but they were more than welcome as i recall.

This is great advice. Bring whatever you have to a local match for a while and start shooting. There are great shooters in Texas that will let you shoot whatever you want and give you some ideas with their advice and a good look at their rifles.

Also, keep in mind that if you get into silhouette seriously you'll probably have something specific you want down the line so youre probably better off shooting a bit and figuring our which stock, trigger, etc. you like before you start modifying rifles. Also, there are two great silhouette gunsmiths in Texas!

Yup, If your in Galveston you'll be shooting with us at PSC or BRI. Bring what you have. We don't care. They are club matches and we'd rather you shoot what you have and have fun then not shoot because you don't have a legal rifle. State and national matches are a different story obviously....

I shot my second Cowboy .22 Silhouette match at PSC today, great fun. I have all but quit shooting 3 Position Smallbore and Service rifle matches . I will soon sell at least two of my 3P rifles(one Suhl) and one of my A2 NM rifles. Hopefully will be putting together a pistol caliber lever gun and a Hunter class .22 rifle. I met the crew at PSC on the fourth Saturday of April and they could not have been a nicer bunch, my kind of people,same thing for the first Saturday crew. For fun this afternoon I did a little shooting with my Valmet Mod 70 .22 match rifle, scoped and it is definitely no fun holding fifteen pounds of gun and scope Offhand for very long.

Those Cowboy SIlhouette matches are very habit forming.
Be careful, you could start driving all over the country looking for matches.
Have you tried your .22 in a PC match? If you hit all the C/P/Ts and ring a couple of rams you'll still win! Of course the state match will be different.

Saturday was my second cowboy .22 match. In April I shot a 17/40, first time out. This month a 21/40. On the first Saturday we shoot Hunter pistol steel. .22LR,PC and pistols all at the same time. I am finding out how hard it is to knock over the heavy rams at 100M with a .22LR. I've shot Service Rifle and 3 Position Smallbore for many years but have never had as much fun as I have in Silhouette.
