Hi Dustin,
I'm a newbe here. Wanted to shoot silhouette for a long time. I'm a member of the Mississippi Valley Gun Club but they have no air gun matches.
I am going to come down to the Nationals and would like to check out your range and see if I can maybe get something started up here.
Also if possible see what some of the shooters are shooting, rifles, scopes, and any other equipment to help me decide on what I will need to compete.
I would appreciate any advice.
thank you :-bd

Not sure if you want advice on starting an air rifle silhouette match or advice on equipment, so I'll try to hit both:

To start a match you only need 45 yards of space, targets with stands and shooters.

To get started, I'd just buy a set of forty 1/10 scale free-standing targets from a place like qualitytargets.com and build some rails or stands for them to sit on. Put the chickens at 20 yards, the pigs at 30 yards, the turkeys at 36 yards, and the rams at 45 yards;get your friends together and shoot.

As for equipment, there are three divisions of air rifle silhouette: target, sporter and open. Target requires unmodified air rifles made for 10 meter Olympic competition. The most popular target air rifles are Walther, Anschutz, Feinwerkbau and Styer.

Sporter requires an unmodified spring-piston rifle. The most common rifle for sporter by far is the Air Arms TX200.

For Open its pretty much anything goes. The rifle must weigh 16 pounds or less and shoot at a velocity that does not damage the targets.

My dissertation on silhouette scopes can be read here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=8180&start=15

My suggestion to new air rifle silhouette shooters is to get a target air gun and shoot it in both target and open divisions. Target rifles are lots of fun to shoot and they force you to learn how to follow through because the pellets move slow and have a longer dwell-time in the barrel. They also force you to learn how to read wind. (I'm digressing away from your questions - if you're interested in my opinions on other silhouette questions, just ask)

Just a little over two weeks away from the 2015 Airgun Silhouette Nationals! You snow-birds up in the northeast, and the northwest, and the west, and Arkansas, everywhere but here really.... need to get your snow shovels out and dig yourselves out of your yards, grab your rifles and head down here to see some green grass and eat some real food!

Anyone with questions, contact me. If you need an RV spot, contact me. It's going to be a great match!!

The Air Rifle National Championships kick off tomorrow with a practice day then the first championship matches on Friday. The range is ready to go and it looks like we are going to have the best attendance yet. We look forward to seeing everyone. If you're still thinking about coming, just leave now and head this way!!

Well rumor has it that Dustin trumped the day today and that this years future National Champ (who thinks he is going to kick his sisters ass) Nick Stieger shot well also.
Hey Nick go get your IBDF shirt tomorrow.

I also forgot:
Jaycee Kennison set National records in Sporter with her 49/60 and her 89/120 AND she won the Hi Sandbagger Award.
Elisabeth set a chicken long run in Open with 68.
Dustin tied Bill Motl's 59/60 in Open, and set a record 117/120.

Thanks for the good match and the GREAT food.
