Match director Fee

Do any of you give your match directors a break on their entry fees ?

Nope, but our match director's a pain and I don't really like him....

Note that our match director is me and I don't really feel right getting any discount on the match fee as I also usually have at least a few other people who help set up and take down everything for the match. I would rather try to have everyone help out with the match and be part of it than get a discount for the effort that I have to put forth.

All our matches...Benchrest, CMP, Over the Course, BR50, IDPA, USPCA. SB Silhouette have paid match directors. I run high power silhouette and my compensation is a break on entry fees ...Ditto for the BPCR director. He and I are constantly being harangued about 'working for free' by the other match directors. It seems that there aren't very many willing to sacrifice time and trouble to run the other competitions

No. Match directors that shoot the match pay the same as everyone else. I have run and still run matches and always pay my entry fee. Match directors should be running matches because they want to run and have the matches, not to get a break on entry fees.

I took over the HP program at CRC in 2004 when the MD retired and moved away. No one else wanted it. The matches must go on !!!

I do not pay an entry fee to shoot. My time and effort is worth the $10.00 two match entry fee. I do get compensated by my club each year by having $100.00 waived from my yearly dues. I am out there with the guys setting up and picking up targets, too.

Tlee in the lever gun thread has it right. More to being a MD than I ever bargained for. I have used my own truck to tow the broke down range truck 30 miles to the nearest repair shop...twice. Tires, oil changes, parts installed. My effort but club pays tab. Target welding repair, range maintenance...the list goes on.

Nope, none. I like it that way. It gives me more credibility when I'm trying to get everyone to help out if they're able. I usually bring an extra rifle and ammo in case we have someone show up without a rifle just to check it out or if a shooter has a rifle that breaks during the match. We give out cash awards to the winners of the match, with a top prize of $10 that's the exact amount that the entry fee is. If I'm lucky and shoot well enough, I might win my entry fee back. I seemed to shoot a bit better at the matches before I started running them, though.

Been noticing the same thing since I started running them last fall. My concentration is not were it needs to be, but I think I am getting a little better slowly. It helps a great deal to have people that help me run parts of the match call relays that I am shooting and things along those lines. It has also been a great help having some old pro's Like Bob around to ask stupid question of. But someone has to run the matches and I want to shoot them so I got appointed.

I doubt that there are many of us doing this "For the Money" we do it because we enjoy the sport and someone has to take bull by the horns and get it done. For most of the reward is seeing fellow shooters enjoying or efforts and maybe an occasional pat on the back and thank you.

I too am in the "No break in Match fees" category. That way I just feel better when on the odd chance I happen to win some of the 50% we give out in winnings.
That only happens rarely - me winning that is. . .

I just pay like all the rest of them, but put in the EXTRA time it takes to put on the matches. Often times folks come and help set up, and ALWAYS folks take down the range items while I score and mark the score books and the rest of the paperwork! I just like the prestige I get from being the called Match Director!

Seriously though, my club had Smallbore Silhouettes for years (back when I shot with them 1 or 2 times/yr), then it went away. I finally joined the club and lamented they never had SBS anymore. I kept wishing and saying "someone needs to start these matches up again. . ." It finally dawned on me that I was that someone. So here I am - glad to be shooting more and getting more people to shoot. We regularly have 15-25 shooters at our monthly matches. Hope that means I'm doing something right!

Pay? That's my pay. That and seeing new shooters and junior shooters excited about it!

I restructured our match fees early last year. Lower entry fee, no awards. All shooter fees go right to the club. In the ten years I have run it I have not taken any money I won. Even the two dollar money shots at our state matches I win goes right back into the kitty for shooter pay out. Never took a dime of winnings.

There is no line of people waiting to take my place as MD. I was perfectly happy being the once a month shooter showing up to help out and shoot. I was a much better shooter before then, too. Our group back then was small, we would have ceased matches if I had not taken over.

I am definitely OK with not paying a shooter fee. No guilt whatsoever.

Our Club is a 501 C4 not for profit. Our workers are carried on a workers compensation policy, our roads are mostly paved, and we have a full time caretaker, frontloaders, vehicles, color satellite TV, insurance, security cameras, and real bathrooms with showers. All silhouette matches have target setters...the liability issues sort of require it. If we give out cash awards they come with a 1099 and from the office. We host 22 local police departments and federal agencies and are surrounded by folks who like to shut down anything involving firearms. We file tax returns and are very careful. In the past when the old silhouette club ran out of a shoe box no one cared about 1099s or getting a break to run a match. Things aren't that bucolic anymore....I run a good match and getting a break on my entry fee makes up for the time and effort and the destruction of my scores... ..did I mention that I'm on the board of directors a no pay and thankless position

Some club's pay match directors in discounted/free membership... some don't. Doesn't make sense to not financially reward them for time and effort but that isn't my call....



I will say everyone reading this needs to thank your match directors and let them know you do appreciate the fact that they take time out of their lives to give you something fun to do in yours.

Add me to the list of "Match Directors should pay like everyone else" list. At my old club, paying was part of the deal. All March fees went into a Range Fund and were available for Range improvements or maintenance. Like some others have mentioned, as a volunteer Match Director, part of annual dues were waived, so there was that small benefit. Between being Match Director and Indoor Range Director, it probably worked out to $1/hour if I was real efficient with my time.

As most of you know, being a match directer is a time consuming and sometimes thankless job. Jeanne is our match director and I'm her assistant. We do everything and last year even cooked lunch for the shooters...but we still pay our yearly dues and match fees. We, and most of you that are Match Directors, pony up a lot of your own money to keep things running . There isn't a line of folks to take her place. One guy tried but gave up. It's tough, especially for a woman who sometimes , unintentionally , steps on some old guy's toes. We are very lucky to have a GREAT group of guys that work hard each and every match and even volunteer many hours and their own money to keep things running.We have always thanked the match director and club members at any match we attend and that little thank you seems to be very appreciated.

Everyone has valid points and I am one that pays $$ to participate and expects nothing in return. Same as those that volunteer at Tournament time to set things up. That has been my position. Ya, sometimes it can be a thankless job, but I have always been one to do for others. Sure, it is nice to get a pat on the back every once in a while. The volunteer helpers[Shooters themselves] make our tournaments what they are. They are the one's that appreciate having the privilege to shoot the sport. To watch the 8 of them go down range to set targets during a tournament and talk amongst themselves while doing so, is nice for me to see. Everyone helps in some way or other. Why should I be different?

Six years ago, our Match Director moved at the last minute, and I volunteered to take over as no one else seemed interested to take over the MD job. I picked up the pieces and figured out what to do with the NRA....etc. I had bought my first firearm, LH CZ 452, and joined the club and Silhouette the year before. June of the same year, being our clubs new MD, our State MD, from another Club, up and left their club. I volunteered to do that too, with scrambling help with long time silhouette shooter from our club.

At the beginning of this year, I did inform a couple long time shooters that this would be my last year as Director. Last Wednesday evening, my assistant acknowledged he would assume the Directors position. I will still be around at age 72, with bad eyes and Bronchitis, continuing to be an "A" classification shooter.
