New Range
FYI---the CMP opened a 20 million dollar facility near the Talladega NASCAR track, 90 miles west of Atlanta. It only lacks silhouette facilities...perhaps some inquires/bitching etc would get us there?

Re: New Range
Randy is there right now. He's volunteering testing and repairing M1s. Good point Mary. They also might listen to Randy as he shoots CMP also.

Re: New Range
Just got back from the new CMP shooting complex in Talladega, Alabama. This range is so high tech that its hard to describe, but i'll try.
Electronic target scoring. This is state of the art technology.I will desribe a NRA HP across the course 2,3,600yd match.
Relay one is on firing line, each position has a monitor with scoring rings. This device will indicate your shot, the last shot and all shots of your string. All auto timed so no late shots or early ones, monitor says when to fire and ceasefire, even rapid fire strings. All other ranges in the country have pits and pit duty for scoring, not here, no more pasting targets marching back and forth 2,3,600 a match takes all day. Also computes all the stats.
Relay one stays on the line 200yd targets lay down automatic and 300 appear, shoot the 300,and they go down and 600yd appear, shoot that string and your done.less than an hour, for a match that took all day at Camp Perry. In the meantime the significant other sits in the air con club house watching the monitors inside on how your doing. This is a totally covered and concrete firing line.Oh did i mention that you will be delivered to the firing line or whatever range you choose by golf cart.no more huge parking lots at each range.sporting clays,trap,100,50,25 yard ranges ,3gun range, tentative 3D archery.Clubhouse has class room, and conference room,Creedmoor sports gun shop and lounge all AC.
There is no silhouette at this time. They do not have room for a 500m range, but i was told that 200m could be done.
Now please don't shoot the messenger. If they would consider ever having silhouette the targets would be electronic. Now before everybody gets in a knot.
Just think about 1 target frame would equal 5 animals,(thats very cost effective in the long run)no paint, setters, repair, stands,no wind knockdowns, but all hits are hits,no dingers. Now think about 22 and PC,no need for 2 sets of animals. Now the next issue would be National Records.Did i just hear a big loud thump of something hitting the ground in Fairfax,VA.Hey if you don't like this futuristic shooting don't complain and don't show up.But those who might like to see this as the overhaul the sport might need, jump on board.I did ask if silhouette targets can be imposed on these frames, they are checking on it.
All this $20 million range and 500 acres was bought through the sales of WWII M1 rifles, ammo, and other rifles. So if you ever thought you would like to own an M1 they are available through the Civilian Marksmanship Program.Money well spent for a piece of history and an org dedicated to marksmanship.

Re: New Range
I like the idea of this. It would give all of us in the east a GREAT place to try a new type of silhouette. I hope they pursue this more. Thanks for the info Hermit 5.

Re: New Range
I suppose one day they will have electronic bullets that are shot from electronic rifles at these electronic silhouettes. Then we won't even need real rifles.
Well, I hope it turns out to be a good thing, but ...

Re: New Range
There are some photos of this new range. thecmp.org
These people know how to make and spend their money wisely to promote marksmanship.
With a project of this size $20 million and 500 acres and done in one year they may be a little busy to answer our silhouette questions.
They are also building and selling thousands of M1s while they last.
