format for CLAS nationals

Post by the ex pom »

Folks if someone could help me out with some info about the CLAS nationals
how many shots do we shoot in a run, do we do 5 or 10 or 40?
what color are the targets?
Are there target setters or do shooters/spotters set?
Roughly how many shooters do you get?

Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

Hello All,
As it seems we are bound for Raton/Whittington later this year for your NRA Cowboy Nationals, we (the Ex Pom and myself, no we don't live together so you can stop drawing too many conclusions at this point you sick puppies) wouldn't mind so much if a few of you good souls would let us (or at least me) know how the Nationals is usually run. As the Ex Pom has asked above, how many shots do you fire per detail, etc etc.
Any information would be gratefully received.

As we are used to only about 50 shooters for a large event, I'm guessing we'll be in for a bit of a shock. OK, that will only apply to me really as I'm just not used to seeing too many folk all in the one place at the same time. (My "Office" is one of the most uninhabited areas on the planet.)

It should be pretty quiet on the Ramslammer front for the next few days as the Brotherhood should be in a place called Bowral for a Cowboy shoot. But rest assured I'm sure the drivel will be coming thick and fast over the next week or two. Just for those of you who miss it....

Regards to all,
Outback Mick

Ex Pom,

The format for the lever action nationals is 40 shots CLA (rifle cartridge) on Monday and 40 on Tuesday. Shoot 5 animals and reset. The Whittington Center provides target setters and scorers.

On Wednesday you shoot PCCLA, 40 in the morning and 40 in the afternoon. The targets are arrayed 10 at each shooting position -- 5 high and 5 low. You shoot the low bank first and then the high. Once again setters are provided as are scorers.

On Thursday you shoot SBCLA, same format on the same range, but of course the targets are thinner.

In all matches there are typically 3 or 4 relays. A relay will consist of 10 animals. You'll shoot your targets in the usual order. If you start on pigs you'll shoot P then T then R and finish on C. -- except for the Rifle cartridge match due to range layout. There if you start on pigs you next go to rams, then chickens and finsh on turkeys. All firing lines are covered.

In 2007 there were a little over 160 shooters at each of the three matches. In 2008 the numbers were 147, 148 and 152. Likely these were down due to gas prices.

One more thing: On PCCLA and SBCLA, you'll shoot five, take a thirty second break then shoot the remaining five.

Cimarron Red,
Thankyou for that information. Hope to catch up with you there.

Innocent,
We only have the single hump variety in Australia, they are a hybrid of the three types brought in during the late 1800s, the riding, draught and meat camel and currently the numbers are estimated to be between 800,000 and 1,000,000 wild/feral camels in our arid & desert country. It is also estimated that they double in number every 8 years or so.
I knock a couple over every year, mostly broken legs or deseased animals. Not much of an impact really. Much of our desert country is under native ownership so doing anything about the bloody things is difficult.

The only way to get rid of them will be to eat them, they are good eating meat, so get some camel into ya.

Outback Mick

But I recall they tell me Kangaroo tasted good too, but I wasn't that fond of it. Probably the old story of it depends on who prepared it, I had it in Sydney in the Botnay bay area.

Bob259,
Remember that in this country over 90% of the 'lamb' available is actually mutton, so you are probably correct in "who prepares it" as well as what it really is. Can't say I have had Kagaroo, or Camel but I've had gator and conch prepared several ways and they are very much a who and how it is prepared dishes. So OB Mick...will give a go when I get down under again.

When do they give out awards and such? Thursday night or on Friday? I would like to know when to book my flight out of Raton.

Thanks,

Confident? Or just cheeky? I have not attend a CLA (yet) but if I know the NRA they will be very slow about passing out awards, if they have them. Actually Greg has gotten a little better about having them at the match, but I have yet to attend a national tournament that he hasn't called some of the awards back to redirect to the correct winner.
Besides, Raton is a beautiful area, why such a hurry to get out of there?

ex pom...I'm ready now, but somewhat like Bob259 I'm a little committed to some elder care, though not the age that he has to deal with, but over the years I have learned to go with the flow. My first trip down under for 3.5 months was only decided upon 3 weeks before I left.

The awards for each match are presented at the close of that match, e.g. the CLA's will be given on Tuesday afternoon, PCCLA on Wednesday and the SBCLA on Thursday along with the aggregate awards. And Innocent is quite right, the illustrious Greg Connor will be the award man. Aside from the match winner, 2nd and 3rd place, high woman, high senior, etc., the class trophies will go to 10 places as I recall, and the same applies to all the ag. winners. And NRA award points (redeemable for merchandise) are generally awarded as well. Unless the weather flexes its muscles as it did last year, proceedings should be over by 6:00 pm, likely sooner.

Cimarron Red,
Last nationals I attended in Raton (smallbore) Greg called out the first place winners for each class, then it was up to the competitor to find out any additional places and go claim their award points at the office. As you might imagine it did not set well with us....so I'm not sure if he has changed or if he even tried to do that with Cowboy.

Innocent,

I've shot the CLA Nationals at Raton in 2000, 01, 05, and 08. I don't remember the specifics of the award presentations in the earlier shoots, but in 05 and last year, Greg called out the awards for every placement. I received several (low level placements) myself.
