As far as I know it is perfectly legal.

I may not understand what you mean so, what do you mean it is not a rimmed case? I know It has a huge rim at the bottom but this might not be what you mean.

Not familiar with the 308 Marlin case, but if it's not a rimmed case, it can't be used. Rule 3.1.3 makes an exception for the 35 Remington

The 308 Marlin Express is a rimmed cartridge, the rifles are made by Marlin and are currently available to whoever wants to buy one. I wish I had bought one when I bought my Marlin XLR chambered in 30-30 because the rams at a couple of ranges I shoot are very heavy and we regularly fail to knock them down when hit even when using 170 gr bullets.

For at least two years people I know have been using it at State and National Championships. As long as they do not damage the targets there is no reason why their rifles would not be legal.

Rules for Cowboy Lever Action Silhouette do not specify what calibers can or can't be used. It does state that a rimmed case loaded with a flat or round nose bullet must be used.

Maybe we should e-mail The NRA silhouette Department and ask about the 308 Marlin. I have an ELK hunt this winter and would love to tell my wife that my old tired 38-55 isn't the best round for Elk, so I need to buy a 308 Marlin that WE could aalso use to shoot CLA!

Nothing to email about. It's a rimmed cartridge fired from a lever action rifle with a tubular magazine. Here's an illustration of the cartridge with a side view of it and then an actual picture from MidwayUSA. Definite rim sticking out. It's legal.

I thought the Evolution (nylon tipped) bullets were called out and not legal, you had to use round or flat nose only.

We're not talking about the bullets in the case. We're talking about the case. You still have to load round or flat bullets in it to use it in cowboy matches.

I want one, but I think I'll get an opinion from the silhouette department before I put down my hard earned bucks. It looks like a rimmed case, I just want to make sure.

Glen ring, if you are going to do that include documentation and at least a piece of brass so that Greg or members of the Silhouette Committee can give you their opinion and if and when you get the brass in your hand you will see that it is a rimmed case. Has already been used at State and National Championships by several shooters I know for at least two years.

Glen ring, buy the rifle and if they do not let you use it where you live then just sell it to me. I will give it a good home.

If I win the lottery I'll buy you one and give it to you! The cartridge looks legal, it's what I want to take Elk Hunting this fall and I hope the silhouette folks say yes Wednesday! I think it will be great for CLA with a flat nose or round bullet .

Thank you for the offer to buy me a rifle if you win the lottery, you are very kind. Just make sure you buy lottery tickets now and then and I will pray for you to win.
If you mean Greg Connor or anybody from the silhouette committee you may have to wait a while. Greg may still be at Raton finishing with Black Powder Cartridge and has to go back in a week or so for SB and HP rifle. The committee will not meet at Fairfax, VA until sometime at the end of the year.
