marlin 39a williams rear sight
hi steel shooters,
have a marlin 39a, made in 1951. have had the sight back to williams for a problem.
now this is my problem, just to hit the leg of the chicken at 40 yards, i have to come up 240 clicks from the bottom of sight setting, williams peep sight, at around 245 clicks, the screw will come out of sight, have a longer screw but do not think this is going to help. what can i do, and what are my options? i do have a lyman front, think its a 17-17a, with thin post with a small ball on it. thanks......dan

What is the height of your lyman on the front, that could be a problem if you have the high one on a ramp.

Dan, what I had to do to a couple of my 39A's to be able to lower my receiver sight was to have somebody cut dove tails where the front sight goes and installed the lowest Lyman 17A available.

howdy,
yes the lyman front is mounted on the ramp, but the lyman front is mounted on a low mount, believe it to be the .404

Dan, remove the ramp or base and have somebody cut the dove tail directly on the barrel that will lower the Lyman 17A enough for you to be able to use your receiver sight, just make sure you install the lowest Lyman 17A available.

On my Marlin 39a, I had the low Lyman 17a in the factory ramp and the Williams FP receiver sight that screwed into the side of the receiver worked fine for all distances for smallbore cowboy silhouette. I still regret selling it to Mordecai.

Re: marlin 39a williams rear sight
Dan, the 404 is the lowest Lyman 17A they make. Now if you can get somebody to remove the ramp and install the Lyman 17A sight directly to your barrel you will have solved the problem of having a high rear receiver sight. Another solution would be to buy a very low Marbles thin bead post and put it on the ramp.

Loneringer, I went a different way. I have a the huge 7/8 Lyman globe on the front of my Marlin 39a and to get the height out of the rear Williams I added a spacer block taped into the top and added a threaded hole to accept the adjustment screw. Works fine for me

Re: marlin 39a williams rear sight
Actually the rear sight is mounted in new holes that I had to drill/tap .312 higher than the orginal mounting holes. I did mention that I'm using a large front globe sight and the aim point is .874 above the top of the barrell. This required me to remount the rear Williams sight higher. So there is no wrong mounting holes just different.

Re: marlin 39a williams rear sight
hi folks,
well i retried the long screw, and it bottomed out on the bottom of sight. well where it stopped was right on the 40m chickens, talk about luck, 20 more clicks, i was on pigs, 20 more on turkeys, and 40 more right on the ram. did not have to do any serious cutting or drilling, and did not have to use the big hammer if you know what i mean. thanks to all.......dan
