I've been using 85gr lead with so-so results and is getting very hard to find in Oz. I heard a while ago that .257 Jacketed works well and found what I think is suitable, the Hornady 60gr FP (this is the link)http://www.hornady.com/store/25-Cal-.257-60-gr-FP
Has any-one else tried these on steel? I've just had the barrel re-lined and it was shooting like a dream, the last lot of lead was pretty ordinary (I gotta have something to blame!)

I've had good luck with Remington 85 gr JFN. 86 gr lead didn't shoot at all in a 1910 era Marlin 94. Would still like to try the 60gr Hornaday, but can't find them in stock anywhere

I just bought a Marlin 25-20, dies, brass and bullets. I'll try my first batch of Remington 86 grn jsp and speer 75 grain over H4198. I'll give you a shout in the next couple of days. With old factory Winchester ammo the gun is as good as I am. There's not any sight adjustment from checkens to rams, just over the front sight. A really neat little gun and cartridge.

Thanks for the help, I also found a company making hard cast lead - Hawkesbury River Bullet Company. Minimum buy is 500 but looking pretty good price wise. Once I get some I'll let every-one know.

I tried it and does not work, the brass is so thin it just collapses if you run it through the 25-20 sizing die. Maybe there is a way but I have not fount it yet.

My 25-20 is a very fun rifle to shoot , but the components are scarce. I've scrounged 300 rounds of new brass and bought 500 Remington bullets all at a very good price. I'm going to purchase some 75 grain Speer as soon as I find some. What is a good load ? I have used Unique Powder in just about everything I shoot and was wondering if anyone has a unique load or know where I can get the data?

Got around to trying some different loads with the Hawkesbury River lead. It's copper coated 85gr lead and shoots fantastically with 5 grains of 2207. Tried a few different loads / powder combos and found the 5 grain the best. Started on the pigs and then moved into the chickens - missed less than normal. Then only had 7 gr of 2207 loads, too hot and went all over the paddock. Did knock over two rams, pity I was aiming at the turkeys.

G'day All

Confirmed last weekend what I'd thought, my little old 92 likes a softer load, cleaned up last weekend with really nice groups using 5 grns of ADI AR2207 with 85 gr copperhawkes. Got beaten by one of the new Marlin 30.30, sheez they're accurate with the right load. Any-way, below is the link to the bullets.

I just purchased some more 73 grain gas checked 25-20 slugs that are extremely good quality and shoot VERY good out of my Marlin. The guy's name is Wells and he sells on Gunbroker. I have his e-mail if anyone wants it. Good bullets, good price, my gun likes them.

Have you purchased/loaded the 73 grain gas check bullet in you 25-20 yet? I think I'll use that slug and a very light load for the Chickens and Pigs and the 86 Remington for the rest of the course.

Not yet Glen, maybe after the Nationals I will buy some and try them on my Winchester 92 to see how they compare in performance to jacketed bullets.
