Help with NS-522 Extractor

HELP!!!

I'm having FTE at increasing rates. For several years, 6-8 matches per year, I had no problems with this gun at all. Then, as I started shooting 1-2 matches per month, it started having an occasional FTE, then started hapening more often - with any brand of ammo. I took the bolt out and slid a fired round under the extractor and everything looked fine - nice and tight, good grasp on the rim, etc. Just giving it a little attention seemed to make it happy for a match or two, but then it would go back to leaving them in the chamber! Just recently I tried to take the extractor completely out of the bolt but I was stumped by the little bugger. So I proceeded to blast it with cleaner and then light oiling. Again, seemed to help for about 100 rnds, but has started FTE again.

I think you guys get the picture. Anybody had this problem with their NS? Is it one of the items that plagues this rifle? I'm using this as a loaner rifle now so I don't need to give a newb any additional problems to worry about.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!!

I have no experience with the NS-522, but based on the description of your increased use, I would guess that you are at least on the right track to remove and clean the extractor recess (and under the retainer if there is one on the off side). Doesn't this rifle use a C-clip style spring? If so, a dental pick or other suitable instrument should allow you to get under the spring and to lift it clear.
Staying with the increased usage theory, fatigue in the spring could be allowing the extractor to slip over the rim. Other causes of this can be cases having an undue amount of "gunk" ( don't laugh, I'm sure its a technical term) introduced into the chamber by the ammo you're using. This "gunk" residue would increase resistance and cause extractors to slip over the rims. I had a CZ that shot Aguila and Ely Sport well enough for 50 yard practice, but I had to increase my attention to cleaning my chamber and bolt face to ensure extraction.

Well, you are not alone. A high use NS of mine has the same problem. A low use NS ejects fine every cycle. I know of another DFW area shooter who replaced his extractor with "sharper hook" piece of spring steel and problem solved. Mine FTE'd rarely so I just filed it away. I love the gun but never got it fixed. Although a ultra clean chamber can help, it is not the primary contributor as a small screwdriver will pop out the spent shell.

He showed me how to remove the ejector by pushing an awl in (where I am vague) but he got it released. IM me and I'll see if I can find you a contact who can provide more advice than I can. The gun is worth the effort. I just keep a small screwdriver on the bench and pop out the shell. The gun is worth getting it sorted.
