A North Bend man "had no choice" when he shot and killed an intruder who broke into his home and threatened to kill him late Friday night, according to a spokeswoman for the King County Sheriff's Office.

The 46-year-old man and his girlfriend awoke to the sound of glass breaking when the intruder threw a propane tank through their back sliding-glass door in the 400 block of South Orchard Drive about 11:40 p.m.

Despite several warnings, the intruder broke into a bedroom where the couple had fled and was shot, according to Sgt. Cindi West, sheriff's spokeswoman.
