iron sights for silouette ?

Post by wphill »

I have a cz UL with brno aperture sights and a klinsky stock. What inserts would be
best to consider for shooting offhand?

And, are there matches which are open sights
only?

As an additional aside, any ever use a a BSA Martini to shoot offhand? If the accuracy
is there, I wouldn't mind owning one.

I can't tell you which inserts are best for shooting that rifle in a smallbore match. None are going to be good because this game is designed to be shot with a scope.

If you want to shoot silhouette without a scope, Cowboy Lever Action silhouette is the game to try. It is great; lots of fun. The targets are 2.5 times bigger than the smallbore targets. However, that rifle is not legal because it's a bolt action and not tube-fed (although we'd let you shoot it in our lever gun matches, just wouldnt count the score)

I have shot several smallbore matches at the 1/5 scale targets with my lever gun and open sights. Best I've ever been able to shoot with that rifle is a 28/40. It's worth a try but dont expect to hit too many.

I shot a Martini that belongs to a buddy of mine. Nice gun, holds well, accurate, heavy, no use for it in silhouette whatsoever.

wphill, many years ago there were quite a few that shot the smallbore with iron sights, many used a post for the front sights. Myself I used my aperture that I had used for shooting prone. Managed to make it into AA class consistently. I will admit my eyes were younger and better. As for a Martini, I have seen them used here in Florida, again a few years ago, only in standard gun as the weight tends to push them out of hunter gun. My recommendation is shoot what you have and enjoy it.

Be sure to pack some Excedrin in your range bag for the eye-strain induced headache though! And some beer to straighten out your fuzzy vision once the match is over. :D

Yep, the collector in me that likes the old vintage rifles may need to be over ruled by
what is more practical. The open sights rifle that I have now is an ultral ux CZ with
klnsky stock, brno sights. and accessorized with gehman iris aperture, sun shade, and
rubber eye piece. Aperture sights unquestionably increase depth of field and one could
throw more money at it with an iris aperture on the front sights plus some other tweaking.
But, I am yet to figure out how eye glasses help with capturing a clean sight picture. Up to
5o yards I might be ok. Last time out, I was able to keep five shot groups within 2 inches..
maybe one flier a little more out the group...some better. I used a fat post on a standard nra small
bore 50 yrd target. Plus painted the 10 ring white.

Offhand shooting has such little interest. I might be joining another gun club that is far
more traditional. They have silhouette matches...outter range is 105 yards. Personally,
I think that it would be good to have offhand matches that only go out about 45 yards.
Would aging eye sight still be an issue at that distance? I really don't know and the
average age shooter at this range is close to 70. These are the guys that have a heck
of a lot to share to newly involved shooters such as myself.

The answer is, Yes, you can do it. Will you win? maybe. Will you have fun? Absolutely. I've done it and I saw a friend shoot a 27/40 with his AR15 Service rifle with a 22 upper. I didn't get a headache and I celebrate every hit as a win. As hard as it is with a scope, I doubt you'll find many people as crazy as you to try it, but how many people lay the animals down on the stands and try to hit their feet? Come to Houston any time and you can play with us.

We still have at least one that comes in from SC to FL states with iron sights...used to be a separate class for it but not anymore.

Chango...

Nice picture. If only I could step outside my backdoor and get an eye full like that!

Can you post a link to the thompson center sights?
Are you shooting rimfire?
Not a huge site radius on the set up in the picture.
Someone is good.
If your eyes need a little help, how does that work out? Rx glasses?

Chango...

New to shooting, much less offhand, so I'm quick to look at how people use their left hand.
The hand (yours?) in the picture holding the sako. Is that how it's held when shooting? Any suggestions? I know that this is a personal decision and that one needs to experiment but I can always try something different. The fellow that won the only match that I've been to held his 10lb target rifle on his finger tips. This really surprised me but not now I'm trying something similar while dry firing. I don't use my finger tips but I do spread my fingers out with the the thumb on the same side as the bolt.

Can you say more as to why the thompson sights are positioned so far forward from the receiver?

I must say that is an interesting combination of stock, barrel, and sights with the sako. Every gun has a story when it is intended for shooting...my assumption. I would very much like to know how you happen to put together this combo. I keep hearing great things about that particular barrel.

Last....peeps not allowed, why? Any cz ul's show up at the range for open sights?

Sorry for all the questions.

Here is a budget rifle I recently put together to shoot open sights at our local match. Savage MKII with bull barrel, off the shelf Boyds stock (the only one I could find inleted for the MKII), butt pad, barrel extension, front and rear sights of my own making. Its not pretty but a real ton of fun to shoot.
