Highpower Hunter Class rifle build in 6.5

I'm looking to build a 6.5 Creedmoor Hunter class rifle based on some variation of a Remington 700 action.

I'm thinking a Remington varmint contour and fluting it and finishing it about 24". Will I make weight with a Fiberglass stock and lighter weight scope or will I need a #4 contour to make it?

Who is a good builder to contact about building this for me?

Also, what contours are other 6.5 shooters running?

You might find that rem varmit contour alittle heavy in a hunter set up. The last one I had in my standard rifle, I had to have fluted to make weight, your best bet would be to have your stock and action and find out how much they weigh and then when you go to order your barrel, talk to a barrel tech and tell him how much weight you have to play with.

For what it's worth I once had a .260 that started out as a VLS I replaced the stock with a regular ADL stock . used talley ultra lite bases/rings leupold 6-18x40 with jewell trigger it made weight . If I remeber correctly it weighted like 9# 10 oz . with unfluted 26" barrel . but the ADL stock was a very light piece of wood , something like 32oz. I f you don't like barrel heavy , you would have hated this gun

I'm very keen on the #5 contour from Lilja. I have a 26" I'm my Wooster stocked hunter gun and it's a true hummer.

That is what I was hoping to hear. I actually already sent an email to Lilja earlier today to find out about a number 4 contour. But a 5 would be better especially at 26". I could even flute the #5.

I use a Pacnor on my savage...The caliber will also dictate the conture..In 7mm I can have a 26...#5 but in the smaller calibers I have to shorten the barrel a bit to keep the weight the same.

Lilja is great........... You should not have any trouble with any of the big name bbl makers.

I have built a few HP 6.5 hunter rifles using #5 and to make weight using # 5 contour, all components will need to be lightweight. Stock with recoil pad will need to weigh under 2 lbs. Need aluminum bolt shroud, light weight rings scope etc. good luck!!

I am using Talley rings with a Leopold 6.5 X 20 long range scope and a two stage X-Treme Shooting Products trigger with safety. No problem making weight. You can contact Evelio McDonald he can discuss details on what will work and what will cause problems making weight.

That is great to know about the #5. Do you get much POI change after a few sets of animals?

How well does a stock like that do for actual hunting? Is the comb incredibly too high for any shooting position other than standing?

I used the same gun for a hog hunt just changed out the bullets for a 140 grain soft point. Shooting was done sitting on top of a platform on top of a truck. Worked just fine, killed four hogs over two days from distance as little as 100 yards to one at over 400. Have not had a point of impact problem shooting 15 shoot strings.
