In an unpublished interview with the owner of a custom barrel company, I learned that some are angry with Bush because he signed an executive order that makes it impossible for precision, low volume gun manufacturers to export profitably. Bush's fear is that terrorists might use their parts and weapons - as if terrorists can't get all the weapons they want anyway. I can't know if this had anything to do with Dan Cooper's decision, but it probably matters and he does cite the extreme right swing the Republican party has taken.

The Republican party is headed for a period of turmoil as their line discipline breaks down and the factions fight for control. It will come down to extreme right (led by evangelicals) and a more moderate, pragmatic wing. If they split, a large number of moderate Democrats would probably join the moderate Republicans, so they might actually become the dominant party. But then, maybe I'm seeing what I want to see 'cause a moderate, pragmatic, thinking alternative sure would be nice.
